hehee I love the concept, cool idea x].
And nice tutorial!
So I sketch out the basic form in either Sketchbook Pro or Photoshop, then I create a new layer above it and reduce the opacity of the original sketch. I then sketch in details more clearly(still sloppy, but definitely cleaner). I create a new layer again and remove the original sketch, and reduce the opacity of the 2nd sketch (I hope you're still keeping up haha) This new layer will be my clean-up layer and I just basically trace over my sketch with cleaner lines and make adjustments where things look weird.
Keep in mind I only do this if the piece I'm working on requires really clean lines. If not then I usually just splotch paint down and shape it to whatever I want. (But for this Mario piece I felt like using clean lines.)
